Ode to the Diorama

Wow, where does the time go?  Oh well, no excuses.  I'll make it up to all you loyal readers by putting TONS of images in this post.

Last month we went to the American Museum of Natural History for Joe's birthday and we had an absolute blast!  My favorite part?  The super amazing dioramas.  There is something absolutely magical about them to me.

Few of you know that I attribute my love of photography to the old view master toys.  Remember those?  I absolutely LOVED staring into mine.  A tiny scene right before my eyes - I could be anywhere, looking at anything, for as long as I wanted.  It was thrilling.  I had the same experience at the museum, staring through my viewfinder and creating compositions in the scenes before me.
So, now that you've seen my "safari" photos - which is your favorite?

Whitney. These. Are. AWESOME. PLus, that museum is my absolute favorite place in the world. Dang you, you made me want to go there soon. Can I sleep on your couch? But for real, I need a print. These are beautiful.

I love the gorilla one. It looks very natural, like you just snuck up on him through the jungle. These are all very cool.

Totally awesome! I must go to this place! It is a toss up between the first two. I LOVE sea otters and I LOVE old forests. You captured them both beautifully. I like the last one too. It makes me feel all awake and refreshed like waking up after sleeping under the stars in the desert.

AMAZING pictures, Whitney! They are beautiful. I think I like the wild dog picture the best--the first one, with the two. Love what you did to that chair, too, so pretty!

The crazy blue and red nosed monkey with the Mr. T mohawk.

And the old forest pic. Reminded me a lot of the forest moon of Endor where the ewoks live.

Awesome pics! Keep 'em coming, especially the Hawaii ones.

These are great! We were just there last week. It's a great museum. My favorite is the picture of the 3 yak looking things (looks like I need to go back and study my species).

That little bird is the cutest little bird I have ever seen. I hope those dioramas realize how good you make them look

You make a great wildlife photographer, Whit-whit! We should go on a safari sometime. Better yet, you should come visit on a safari!

Well, these are beautiful. As for which one(s) are our favorites, Alex likes the 7th picture down with the gazelles and I like the 13th picture down of the monkey.

All are incredible! My favorite is the gorilla one. It reminds me a little of the pic you posted on the family blog of Joe and Ellie - mostly just the Joe part! Are these on film or digital?

These are digital.

"O6" is my favorite because it looks the most alive, but it was hard to choose. The backgrounds are stunning; thank you for sharing! (I'm bloghopping from Cjane's "We're On Our Way Over" post.)

I'd forgotten how much I liked these photos. Please tell Joe I'm not mad at him for calling me at 3am to see if we were going to survive the tsunami.
